4) Ice Fishing –

This is a fishing activity only available in winter months. Between the time when ice is formed on lakes and thick enough for huts to be placed on them without the risk of sinking and when it is deemed to be unsafe due to melting of ice (After Christmas to first week in March), the sport of ice-fishing is on!

There is a misconception that it is cold and dangerous to do ice-fishing. This is only true if you want to do this by yourself and stay outdoors. Rent a commercial hut for $50-60 per day for each person (2 minimum) and you can enjoy fishing in the comfort of a safe ice fishing hut with propane supply for heating and cooking and complete with bait (minnows) supplied. These huts are only placed on ice when the thickness is over 10-12 inches.

A favourite ice-fishing spot will be Lake Simcoe 45 minutes north of Toronto where hundreds of commercial huts are placed on ice every winter. Fishes caught in winter include primarily perch, crappies, white-fish, lake trout, and pickerel.

There are 5-6 round holes or one regular large hole cut into the at least one foot thick ice inside the huts for the anglers. Extra holes can be cut outside the huts by some operators upon request. It is important to note that anglers are allowed two fishing line per person for ice-fishing but they must be within 60 m (197 ft.) and you must have a clear and unobstructed view of the lines being used at all times. A valid year-round fishing license is required for ice-fishing even if a commercial fishing hut is rented.

Once arrived at the fishing hut and taken out to that location by ice-travelling vehicle, you will need to take off your outer winter wear. Temperature inside the fishing hut is warm! I usually take along enough food for a Hot-pot cooking session with my friends for lunch. There is usually a washroom “hut” amongst the cluster of fishing huts so you don’t have to go back to shore for those urgent needs.

The operators will drop you off in the morning and pick you up at the start of evening to go back to shore and your vehicle. This is like going to a party with your friends so don’t forget to bring a camera!

The winter fishing rods are short (2 feet and under) and light weigh lines are used. Other than the very productive live baits, special lures can be used as well but the motions employed will be up and down (vertical) jigging instead of a horizontal trolling motion in summer. On a good and lucky day, every one can go home with a limit of 50 perch and 30 crappies. I have done it myself. Lake trout are typically limited to 2 per day.
