Yonge Street Mission, the institution to improve lives for street-involved youths, plans to come into Chinatown and to establish a facility on Spadina Ave. The announcement has sparked strong oppositions from the Chinese community, which intends to kick the new project out of Chinatown. Bob Mok’s series put the controversial project under the spotlight.

In November 2015, the Yonge Street Mission (YSM) announced their intention to move into buildings located at 365/367 Spadina Ave in the heart of Chinatown Toronto. According to YSM, the 24,000-square-foot site will offer expanded services designed to accommodate the needs of Toronto’s street-involved youth by the end of 2017 upon the completion of renovations.

This announcement set off a firestorm within the Chinese Community and many opposed to this move. Over 3000 residents signed a petition opposing this relocation of the YSM facility since then. It is expected that beyond the protest rally already happened, there will be further discussions and efforts to dislodge this facility from the area.

There are many rumours and conjectured reasons as to the why YSM would make this proposed move. One confirmed fact is that the existing Evergreen Centre location was sold to a developer as part of their plan to build two condominium towers with 1106 residential units. A Development Proposal to initiate an amendment to the Official Plan and the City of Toronto zoning by-law is shown on a sign posted outside the building.
