Opinion: Few expected Titan submersible not subjected to industry-standard test

The missing submersible Titan had sparked a speculation frenzy as people across the world looked anxiously to find out what happened to the crew of seafaring explorers and billionaires who vanished after plunging into the ocean's depths to see the storied century-old wreck. Many assumed Titan was intact and the “seven different return-to–surface backup systems" would send it to the ocean surface, bobbing somewhere on the remote Atlantic. Others imagined it got caught in lost trawler fishing nets and other drifting materials near the Titanic, rendering the submersible unable to move. The banging sounds picked up by the sonar equipment gave them hope that the five men aboard were still alive, making distress signals by hitting a hard object against the sub.

But some industry insiders say they knew the truth the morning after its disappearance, long before the US coast guards announced that the sub suffered a catastrophic pressure implosion less than two hours after its departure, killing all people on board. Film director and deep-sea explorer James Cameron, who has made more than 30 dives to the wreckage of the Titanic, said he knew the tragedy had happened as soon as he heard the submersible had lost navigation and communications during its descent. Cameron, along with many others in the deep submergence community, had long been concerned about the vessel's safety and OceanGate's experimental approach, he told the media, lamenting that the company had ignored experts' calls to undergo a standard certification process.

Among the experts who weren't surprised about the sub’s implosion was David Lochridge, the former Director of Marine Operations at OceanGate. According to a January 2018 quality inspection report and a lawsuit ensued, Lochridge flagged concerns over the Titan’s ability to stand up to the pressure of diving into 4000 meters, the depth where the Titanic lay on the ocean floor. He discovered the viewport at the forward of the submersible was designed to endure a certified pressure of only 1,300 meters rather than a crushing pressure generated by the intended 4000-meter depth.  But “OceanGate refused to pay for the manufacturer to build a viewport that would meet the required depth of 4,000 meters,” he added.

When Lochridge “again expressed concerns regarding the quality control and safety issues relating to the Titan” and “insisted that OceanGate perform non-destructive testing on the experimental hull” — in addition to urging OceanGate to use an agency to certify the submersible — he was “immediately fired" and given 10 minutes to exit the premises.

According to Lochridge, his dismissal left OceanGate customers who pay an average of $250,000 per person to take the “once-in-a-lifetime missions” in the dark about the submersible's potential danger as it went ever deeper into the ocean. “The paying passengers would not be aware, and would not be informed, of this experimental design, the lack of non-destructive testing of the hull, or that hazardous and flammable materials were being used within the submersible,”, said Lochridge in the complaint.

Also left in the dark were people who assumed the sub would have undergone stringent quality assurance and pre-dive preparations processes like pre-departed airplanes. Captivated by the mystery of the missing Titan for almost a week, they had fantasized about all possible scenarios that may lead to the mysterious disappearance of the Titan, except the ones caused by the risky safety standards the design and construction of the sub subjected to.
