Let us continue our discussions on the other modes of fishing not covered by our previous article.

3) Shore Fishing –

This is commonly practiced in Spring and Fall to maximize the chance of catching fishes. Fishes will approach rivers and streams at these times to spawn, particularly Salmon and trout. They will be stopped by artificial barriers like dams. Some of these structures now have built-in fish ladders at their sides to assist the fishes to “Climb” above the dam. Fishes will concentrate around these entry points to take their turn and use them. Standing on iron grates, you can see the fishes jumped from one concrete step onto the next higher one as they tried to go upstream.

Therefore, anglers are not allowed to fish within 22.9 m (75 ft.) downstream from the lower entrance to any fish way or canal, obstacle, or any device designed to assist fish around an obstacle.

When fishing from shore, be careful with the selection of your location and avoid fish sanctuaries. Fish sanctuaries are described in the exceptions to Zone regulations. No fishing of any kind is permitted in a fish sanctuary. Some bodies of water, or parts of them, are declared fish sanctuaries for all or part of the year. Fish sanctuaries are not always marked with signs.

If you are fishing from shore at cottages, be aware that fishing regulations on open-season and size limits are applicable, contrary to misconceptions given by some real estate salesperson or misled neighbours!

Anglers fishing from shore are expected to lose a lot of fishing terminal gears like lines, hooks, and sinkers as the chances of snagging onto trees and rocks under water is high. Many anglers will use bobbers to keep their hooks and baits off the bottom. Popular species caught in the order of spawning times (April to June) will include: Trout, Salmon, Black Crappies, Pike, Pickerel, and Bass.

Chances to catch fish from shore dropped off rapidly after the spawning periods as the fishes will return to the lakes. In the fall, some species of salmon will make another spawning run and once again the area in front of the dams will be choked full of fish (and anglers)!

Some anglers will venture out onto the rivers and stand in the currents wearing hip or body waders to get at prime spots not accessible from shore. It is advisable to wear a life-vest as the bottom can be slimy and slippery. A fall can result in injury and even drowning if one is not careful.

Most anglers will start off using live baits such as worms, leeches, or minnows when they first get into the sport. There are rules from the Ministry and must be obeyed. Most people will buy baits from commercial places rather than catching their own because commercial baits are always in compliance with the laws.

Artificial baits are plastic in nature and typically laced with powerful chemicals that fish will hold on longer than live baits and allow the anglers to set the hooks in ample time. There are the old steel based spinner baits still being use and they are effective as well when used by experience anglers with the right techniques.

In future, we will talk about fishing from a boat in Summer and the unique experience in Ice fishing during Winter months.
